25 Rare and Beautiful Photos of Marylin Monroe By Eve Arnold_PU

Marilyn Monroe

Eve Arnold was a pioneering American photojournalist whose work left a lasting mark on the world of cinema and celebrity portraiture. Born in 1912, Arnold rose to international recognition after joining the prestigious Magnum Photos agency in 1951, becoming a full member by 1957. Throughout her career, she captured some of the most intimate and revealing images of Hollywood icons, most notably the legendary actress Marilyn Monroe.

Arnold’s relationship with Monroe began in the early 1950s, when she was granted behind-the-scenes access to the star’s life and work. This collaboration produced a series of candid and timeless portraits that went beyond typical publicity stills, revealing Monroe’s vulnerability, charisma, and dedication to her craft. Among her most celebrated assignments was documenting Monroe during the production of her final completed film, The Misfits (1961). Directed by John Huston and co-starring Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift, the film was a bittersweet chapter in Monroe’s career and a poignant moment in cinema history.

Arnold’s photographs from The Misfits became iconic, blending artistry with documentary realism. They showcased Monroe not only as a glamorous actress but also as a hardworking professional navigating the intense pressures of the film industry. What made Arnold’s work stand out was her ability to humanize stars—capturing quiet moments of reflection, laughter, and exhaustion—thus giving audiences a deeper connection to the people behind the screen.

Beyond The Misfits, Arnold photographed Monroe from 1951 onwards, producing a vast archive of images that chronicled the actress’s evolution both on and off set. Many of these photographs remained unseen by the public for decades. In May 2005, the Halcyon Gallery in London hosted a landmark exhibition, unveiling a collection of Arnold’s previously unpublished Monroe photographs. This exhibition attracted global attention, drawing visitors from the world of cinema, photography, and art, and reaffirming Arnold’s role as one of the most influential photojournalists of the 20th century.

Eve Arnold’s legacy continues to inspire both photographers and film historians. Her ability to merge the visual language of documentary photography with the glamour and drama of cinema made her work timeless. Through her lens, Marilyn Monroe was not just a star of the silver screen, but a complex, real woman—forever immortalized in the history of film and the artistry of portraiture.
